The full title of the Mahāvairocana Sūtra is The Great Sun Buddha’s Supreme Empowerment and Transformation Sutra. “Vairocana,” in Sanskrit, means “Solar Disc,” referring to the sun. It symbolizes the radiant wisdom that dispels darkness and universally illuminates all.
However, the sunlight of the mundane world is limited in direction and scope—it can only illuminate the surface, not the interior of things. At times, one region may be bathed in daylight, while another lies in utter darkness.
The Tathāgata’s light of wisdom is not so. It universally shines upon all realms without obstruction. There is no distinction of inside or outside, direction or time—day or night. It is the true Great Light.
Moreover, the sun shines upon Jambudvīpa (the southern continent), allowing plants to grow according to their nature and enabling worldly endeavors to progress. Similarly, the Buddha’s wisdom light pervades the entire Dharma realm, equally inspiring the virtuous roots of countless sentient beings. Whether it be worldly affairs or transcendent cultivation, all depend upon this light to be fulfilled.
When dark clouds cover the sun, it may seem as though the sun has vanished, but it has not been destroyed. When the wind scatters the clouds, the sunlight reappears—not newly born, but always present.
Such is also the light of the Buddha-nature within sentient beings. Though veiled by the dense clouds of ignorance, afflictions, and delusive thoughts, it has never diminished. It remains completely perfect. The boundless suchness of all phenomena and the wisdom of samādhi have not increased because of this.
For these profound reasons and conditions, the mundane sun ultimately cannot fully represent the Buddha’s light of wisdom. It can only serve as an approximate analogy. Thus, the Buddha is given the great name “Mahāvairocana,” the Great Sun Tathāgata.
